Lemonade Cleansing Diet for
Purifying your Body
Obesity is perhaps the biggest health concern facing millions of people
worldwide. Most people work for extended amounts of time which results in erratic food habits and lack of
exercise. Watching one’s weight and remaining fit and trim are the latest trends in healthcare. A complete
weight loss program consists of a proper exercise regimen and a strict dietary plan. One such effective
detoxifying diet plan is the lemonade cleansing diet. This unique diet was first introduced by Stanley
Burroughs in his book The Master Cleanser which was released in 1974. The lemonade diet was initially intended
to cleanse the body from all harmful toxins. However over the years, this diet has evolved as a weight loss
diet as a natural side effect of the lemonade diet is reduction of weight.
Since 1974 a more updated version has been produced by author Raylen Sterling titled
"Master Cleanse Secrets". The lemonade cleansing
diet is basically a juice based diet to be followed for a period of 10-40 days depending on each individual’s
capacity to adhere to the diet. Nutrients and energy is supplied only through a mixture of 2 tablespoons of fresh
lemon juice, mineral water, 1/6 teaspoon cayenne pepper and 2 tablespoons of maple syrup. Each serving of lemon
juice mixed this way is designed to provide 109 calories. A minimum of 10 glasses of lemonade should be consumed in
a day to gain the required amount of calories.

Apart from the basic lemon juice, individuals following the lemonade cleansing diet are
allowed to have a salt water flush in the morning and a laxative tea in the evening. Other liquid drinks that are
permissible are peppermint tea and pure water. The diet is effective only if maintained for more that 48 hours. An
important tip to remember while ending the diet is that the fast should be gradually broken by taking fresh citrus
juices initially. Inclusion of fresh raw vegetables, light soups and fully cooked vegetables should be done in
phases over a period of three to five days.
People who follow this diet may experience certain side effects such as nausea, vomiting,
headache, irritability and tiredness. These side effects however, appear only in the initial stages of the diet. It
is best to follow this diet in consultation with a physician. Usually a period of 10 days has proven to be
effective. Persons having high blood sugar and blood pressure must take care not to affect their regular dosages of
medications while on the diet. Continuous intake of water is necessary to avoid dehydration. People who complete
one course of this diet should wait for a period of at least six months before they can start the next course of
the lemonade cleansing diet.
Nutritionist counter argue that the lemonade cleansing diet should not be considered as a
weight loss diet since it does not provide the essential nutrients required by the human body. They also warn that
the lemonade diet should not be seen as a weight loss diet as its original goal was detoxification. Though this
diet can be prepared at home, several healthcare companies have come out with a ready made master cleanse or
lemonade diet to facilitate easy availability.
