Ever since its discovery, green tea has become an
integral part of any healthy diet. Green tea was first used by the Chinese for its medicinal properties.
Studies have revealed that green tea helps in burning calories. The impact of green tea diet can be understood
by finding out how green tea is made.
Green tea is made from a plant called Camellia Sinensis. Though many other types of tea
such as black tea and regular tea are extracted from the same plant, green tea undergoes the minimum amount of
processing. This makes green tea high in anti-oxidants required for the body. Green tea is rich in a particular
polyphenol called epigallocatechin gallate or EGCG. EGCG is believed to be an effective anti-oxidant which can help
in restricting the growth of cancer cells. EGCG is also helpful in lowering cholesterol and controls the formation
of blood clots. Hence, green tea can be considered as a vital ingredient that helps in reducing the risk of heart
attacks. Other diseases that can be prevented by the consumption of green tea are rheumatoid arthritis and other
infections.
The green tea diet is basically any diet of your choice which has green tea as the main
beverage. Having green tea at least 5 times a day reduces fat content and improves the body’s metabolism. This
process is called the thermogenic effect. Solid diet during green tea diet can include fresh vegetables and other
low fat food. It is advisable to drink green tea before and after meals in particular as it helps in controlling
appetite. It is for this reason that green tea diet is believed to be beneficial for weight loss. Regular water
should also be taken in reasonable amounts when following this diet.

There are various kinds of green tea available such as decaffeinated, flavored and
organic. Green tea produced without the help of chemicals and pesticides are by far the best quality of green tea.
Pregnant women should however be careful while consuming green tea as it contains caffeine. High amounts of
caffeine can cause nausea, vomiting and frequent urination.
The green tea diet is also available in the form of ready-made pills which can be taken
along with food. These pills contain caffeine and an ingredient called catechin, which increase the body’s
metabolism. It is important that these pills are taken very carefully as excessive intake can cause stomach aches
and diarrhea. Dosages vary from 400g-600g and should be taken three times a day along with meals. Green tea if
consumed in reasonable amounts and accompanied by a healthy diet can prove to be a very effective way to control
weight. Side effects of green tea manifest only when it is consumed excessively. Green tea diets can be
followed all year round by people of any age group.
Although research has not yet been able to establish that use of green tea diet will
guarantee weight loss, personal experiences have proved that green tea has indeed ingredients which help in burning
calories which are an essential part of weight reduction.
